Viceroy Cup 2001
Nejmeh defeated Shabab Sahel [2-0] November 5, 2001

Nejmeh qualified to the semi-finals of Viceroy Cup 2001 after defeating Shabab Sahel [2-0] in the match that took place on Monday November 5, 2001 5:45 p.m., at Beirut Sports City Stadium. This qualification comes in light of last Saturday draw result between Tadamoun Sour & Shabab Sahel [0-0] in the opening, as such Nejmeh secured a place in the semi-finals and only has to decide the group standings in the match against Tadamoun Sour on Wednesday November 7, 2001 5:45 p.m., at Beirut Sports City Stadium.

Back to the match details, as for Nejmeh, this team has been showing lately very strange & weak performance despite being one of the earliest teams to have started their training sessions, and raised their fitness, and readiness especially after participation in the President Bashar Asaad Tournament in Latakia last summer, and the series of friendly matches. To the contrary, the team appeared in weak shape, inconsistent defense line, and paralyzed midfield and offense if we didn't count the first 10 minutes of the match, Nejmeh is still lacking the likes of Errol McFarlane, and Moussa Hojeij who is still away from the team, such players who were able to carry the team and control its pace. Similarly, the match goals were scored by the defender Abbas Shahrour from personal efforts & wonderful shots [2', & 64'], and for the most of the match, the team lacked the translation of opportunities near Sahel area, as most of the attack efforts were wasted near the penalty area. However, the pace got better in the second half after the entry of defender Riad Kobeissi who scored a goal that was cancelled for offside, and Jamal El-Hajj who controlled the midfield, and led his team to the safe end of the match all through the last 10 difficult minutes.

On the other side, Shabab Sahel made a good match, and created serious danger on Nejmeh defense, but suffered the close marking of their Forward Line Mahmoud Majeed and the less experienced Hussein Olleik, probably the import of Iraqi player Mohammad Abou Saada will provide much efficiency to this line in the coming season. Majeed made a generous effort, and disturbed Nejmeh defense line with his sudden counter attacks that could have generated goals without the persistent bad final touch & luck that is following him since the last match against Tadamoun. Sahel lost the match, and almost got eliminated of the competition, its only hope remains that Nejmeh defeats Tadamoun Sour by a goal difference more than 2 goals in order to qualify as the Second team of the First group together with Nejmeh.
